Regular strength training should be part of every runner's routine, not just something introduced after an injury. Strong calves, ankles, hips and core muscles all contribute to more efficient running mechanics and help absorb the impact forces created during every stride. It can also be worth varying the surfaces you run on. Constantly running on roads and pavements exposes your legs to repeated impact on hard ground, whereas incorporating some runs on grass or well-maintained trails can reduce those forces. Grass provides a slightly softer surface that places less stress on the lower legs, making it a useful option for easy runs or recovery sessions. It's important to remember, however, that uneven ground can increase the risk of trips or ankle sprains, so always choose firm, even grass where possible and introduce different surfaces gradually. Replacing running shoes before they become excessively worn, warming up properly before harder sessions and including recovery days within your training programme will also reduce the chances of developing shin splints. Most importantly, pay attention to the early warning signs. A slight ache that appears after a run is far easier to deal with than pain that has been building for several weeks.
