Boston Marathon 2027: Course, Entry And Race Guide
The Boston Marathon 2027 takes place on Monday 19 April. Starting in Hopkinton and finishing on Boylston Street, it is a race shaped by its history, its challenging course and the effort required to reach the start line.
For most runners, entry begins with a qualifying time, but meeting the standard does not guarantee a place. Official charities and authorised tour operators offer other ways in. Here is what to expect from the course, race weekend and the 2027 entry process.

The Destination
Boston gives you plenty to explore around marathon weekend. The Freedom Trail connects historic sites across the city, while Beacon Hill, the North End and the waterfront are worth visiting if you have time after the race.
The marathon starts in Hopkinton, outside the city, and finishes in Boston’s Back Bay area. When choosing accommodation, think about your journey to the official race morning transport and how you will get back from the finish. A convenient location can make a long day considerably easier.
Save the longest sightseeing walks until after the marathon. You will enjoy exploring Boston more once you no longer have a race to run.
History Of The Boston Marathon
First held in 1897, Boston is the world’s oldest annual marathon. The race grew from a small field into an international event, while retaining the point to point route and Patriots’ Day tradition that give it much of its character.
Boston has been part of the Abbott World Marathon Majors since the series began in 2006. For some runners, it is a step towards completing the Majors. For others, earning a Boston place has been the goal throughout years of marathon training.
Who Organises The Boston Marathon?
The Boston Marathon is organised by the Boston Athletic Association, known as the B.A.A. It sets the qualifying standards, manages entries and publishes the instructions runners need for race weekend.
Read its participant information when it becomes available for 2027. Transport, start times, permitted items and course support are details to check for your own edition of the race.
When Is The Boston Marathon 2027?
The Boston Marathon 2027 is confirmed for Monday 19 April 2027. It will be the 131st running of the race.
April weather in Boston can be unpredictable. Check the forecast close to race day and prepare for the wait before starting in Hopkinton as well as the run itself.
Boston Marathon Expo
Runners collect their race materials before the marathon. The expo has previously taken place at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston’s Back Bay area, but check the B.A.A.’s 2027 instructions for the confirmed venue, opening hours and collection requirements.
If you are travelling to Boston, leave enough time to collect your bib without relying on a tight arrival schedule. Once you have what you need, there is little benefit in spending the whole day on your feet.
Race Morning
The start line is in Hopkinton, approximately 26 miles from central Boston. Runners normally take official transport to the start area and wait in the Athletes’ Village before moving to their assigned wave.
Plan for more than the journey itself. You will need time for transport, toilets and the walk towards the start, and you may be waiting outdoors before your race begins. Check what you are permitted to bring and wear while waiting.
The B.A.A. will confirm the 2027 transport and wave arrangements in its participant instructions. Follow the timings assigned to you rather than using details from a previous year.

Boston Marathon Course
The Boston Marathon follows a point to point route from Hopkinton to the finish on Boylston Street. It passes through Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley, Newton and Brookline before reaching Boston.
The course loses elevation overall, but that description hides its main challenge. Downhill running in the opening miles can tire your legs long before you reach the Newton Hills. Understanding how the route changes will help you pace it.
Hopkinton And The Opening Miles
The race begins on Main Street in Hopkinton. After the excitement of the start, the road drops noticeably as runners head towards Ashland. It is tempting to let the descent pull you along faster than planned, especially when you feel fresh and have people moving quickly around you. Give yourself time to settle. The downhill sections may feel easy on your breathing, but your legs are still doing work that you will notice later in the marathon.
Ashland, Framingham And Natick
The route follows Route 135 through Ashland and Framingham, passing the historic Framingham train depot at around mile 6.5. By now the initial rush has eased and you can begin to find a more comfortable rhythm. The course continues through Natick on its way to Wellesley. These middle miles are an opportunity to concentrate on your pace, take drinks as planned and begin fuelling early enough to support the second half. Boston rewards runners who resist the urge to treat a good first 10 miles as proof that they should speed up.
Wellesley And The Halfway Point
Wellesley brings one of Boston’s most memorable stretches of support. The cheering around Wellesley College can be heard before you reach it, and the noise is a lift as you approach halfway. Enjoy the moment, then return to your own race. The course continues through Wellesley before reaching Newton Lower Falls. Although you have already covered more than half the distance, the section that gives Boston its toughest reputation is still ahead.
The Newton Hills
After crossing into Newton, the route turns at the fire station onto Commonwealth Avenue. The first of the famous Newton climbs begins around mile 17. From there, a series of hills interrupts any rhythm you established earlier. The climbs are manageable when considered individually. Together, they are demanding because they arrive after the downhill opening and many miles of running. Hold a steady effort on each ascent rather than trying to force your usual pace uphill. Heartbreak Hill is the last and best known of the climbs, cresting at around mile 20.8. Reaching the top is a significant moment, but it is not the end of the race. Keep enough energy for the miles that follow.
Boston College, Brookline And Kenmore Square
After Heartbreak Hill, runners pass Boston College and continue towards the Chestnut Hill Reservoir. The route then turns towards Cleveland Circle before joining Beacon Street through Brookline. You may welcome the absence of the Newton climbs, but tired legs can make the closing miles difficult. Focus on maintaining your effort and keep taking on fuel and fluids according to your plan. Beacon Street carries runners towards Kenmore Square. At about mile 25.2, the Citgo sign marks roughly one mile to go. It is a welcome sight, though the finish is still out of view.
Hereford Street And The Finish
From Kenmore Square, the course continues towards the final two turns: right onto Hereford Street, then left onto Boylston Street. The finish line near the Boston Public Library comes into view as you make that left turn. The crowds are loud here, and the straight gives you time to take in the occasion. Whether you have qualified, raised money for a charity or travelled across the world to be there, this is the stretch you will remember.

Aid Stations And Race Support
The B.A.A. provides drinks, toilets and medical support along the route, with fuel available at designated points. Check its 2027 course information for the final locations and products before deciding what to carry.
Practise your fuelling plan during training. Race day is a poor time to discover that a drink or gel does not suit you, particularly on a course where you will want energy for the later hills.
How Difficult Is The Boston Marathon Course?
Boston is harder to pace than its overall downhill profile suggests. The first miles encourage you to run quickly, while the Newton Hills arrive after you have been on the road for a long time.
Include downhill running and hills in your preparation if you can. On race day, judge your effort across the whole course rather than trying to hold the same pace through every section. Weather may also affect what is realistic.
What Makes The Boston Marathon Special?
Boston asks many runners to work towards the start line for years. A qualifying time may take several attempts; and one of the alternatives, a charity place brings a substantial fundraising commitment alongside marathon training.
Once you are there, the race takes you through communities that have become part of its story. Wellesley, Heartbreak Hill and Boylston Street are familiar names before you arrive, but running them gives each a meaning of your own.
Is Boston A Fast Marathon?
Boston can produce fast times, but its downhill start does not make it an easy personal best course. Runners who use too much energy early may lose far more time on the later climbs.
If you have a time goal, prepare for the course and start conservatively. A strong second half is more useful than a few quick opening miles.
How To Enter The Boston Marathon 2027
Most runners enter by applying with a qualifying marathon time. Standards vary by age and gender. Meeting your standard makes you eligible to apply, but acceptance depends on the number of places and how far applicants’ times are below their standards.
Qualifier registration for 2027 took place from 14 to 18 September 2026 and will not reopen. The B.A.A. received 33,656 qualifying applications and expects to notify runners of acceptance or non-acceptance by early October.
New for 2027, approximately 1,000 applicants who met their qualifying standard but missed the acceptance cut off will be selected at random for places. This selection is part of the completed qualifier application process, not a ballot open to other runners.
If you did not apply as a qualifier, investigate the B.A.A.’s official charity programme or its authorised international tour operators. Check the full entry and payment conditions before accepting a place.
Running The Boston Marathon 2027 For Charity
The B.A.A. has selected 215 organisations for its 2027 Official Charity Program. They buy invitational entries and recruit runners who commit to raising money for their causes.
Choose a charity whose work matters to you, then ask about its fundraising target, any upfront costs and the support it provides. Requirements vary, so make sure the commitment is achievable before you apply.
A runner with a qualifying entry can also fundraise without taking a charity place. Whether you enter through a charity or decide to support one after qualifying, sharing why the cause matters to you will give people a reason to follow your journey.

Our Verdict
Boston deserves its reputation as one of the great marathons. Its entry process takes planning, and the course demands patience, but those challenges are part of what makes reaching Boylston Street so rewarding.
Prepare carefully for the early descents, the Newton Hills and the journey to Hopkinton. Then, when you make the final turn onto Boylston Street, take in the finish you have worked so hard to reach.
