Great Birmingham Run 2027: Race Guide, Courses And How To Enter

8 min read

The Great Birmingham Run brings thousands of runners to the streets of England's second largest city for a weekend of running, entertainment and community support. With a half marathon, 10K and two children's events, the programme welcomes experienced runners, beginners and families to one of the Midlands' major running occasions.

The adult races take participants through Birmingham's historic neighbourhoods, shopping districts and cultural landmarks, while younger runners have their own events at Alexander Stadium. The weekend also provides opportunities to run for charity, with supporters gathering along the routes to encourage participants.

The Destination

Birmingham is located in the West Midlands and is one of the UK's largest cities, with a history shaped by manufacturing, trade and industrial innovation. Today, its former industrial districts sit alongside modern shopping centres, entertainment venues, museums and an extensive network of canals.

The city centre has undergone considerable redevelopment, particularly around Centenary Square, Brindleyplace and the surrounding canals. The Library of Birmingham, Symphony Hall and the International Convention Centre are among the prominent buildings in this area, while nearby Broad Street is known for its restaurants, hotels and nightlife.

Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter is another distinctive neighbourhood, with a history of jewellery manufacturing that continues through independent workshops and specialist businesses. Visitors can explore its historic streets, galleries and museums, including the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter.

The city is also known for its food scene, with restaurants representing many communities from around the world. The Balti Triangle, centred around Sparkbrook and Sparkhill, has a long association with Birmingham's curry culture, while Digbeth has developed into a destination for independent businesses, street art and creative venues.

Away from the city centre, Birmingham has substantial green spaces, including Cannon Hill Park, Sutton Park and the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Edgbaston is also home to one of England's best known cricket grounds, providing another connection between the city and major sporting events.

History Of The Great Birmingham Run

The event traces its origins to the Birmingham Half Marathon, first held in 2008. It subsequently became part of the Great Run series, establishing itself as a major fixture in the city's sporting calendar.

Over the years, the event has developed to include a 10K alongside the half marathon, with changes to the courses and race weekend arrangements. The addition of shorter events for younger participants has expanded the programme, creating opportunities for families to become involved.

The organiser currently lists the Junior event from 9:00am and the Mini event from 10:00am on Saturday. Sunday's 10K is scheduled to begin at 8:30am, followed by the half marathon at 9:15am, although participants should check their final event instructions for wave allocations and any timetable changes.

Race Morning

The half marathon and 10K start in Centenary Square, beside the Library of Birmingham and the International Convention Centre. Both races finish on Jennens Road, with the event village located at Aston University.

Birmingham New Street is the city's principal railway station, with Birmingham Moor Street and Snow Hill providing additional connections. Public transport is generally the most practical option during the event because road closures affect parts of the city centre and surrounding neighbourhoods.

The Junior and Mini races have separate arrangements at Alexander Stadium in Perry Barr. Families attending these events should follow the organiser's specific travel instructions rather than the information provided for Sunday's races.

Great Birmingham Run 2027 Courses

The half marathon and 10K showcase several of Birmingham's best known districts and landmarks. Both begin in the city centre, although the half marathon extends farther south to include additional parkland and the Edgbaston area.

The following descriptions reflect the organiser's published route information. Courses remain subject to change, so participants should consult the final 2027 maps when they become available.

Great Birmingham Run 10K Course

The 10K takes runners through Birmingham's central streets, incorporating areas around the Jewellery Quarter and St Paul's Square. This part of the course combines historic buildings and established residential neighbourhoods with the city's commercial districts.

The route also features landmarks associated with the Mailbox, Grand Central at New Street Station and St Martin's Church. These sections provide a contrast between Birmingham's older streets and its modern shopping and transport developments.

Southside and Digbeth introduce runners to areas known for entertainment venues, independent businesses and street art. The final approach passes the distinctive curved exterior of the Selfridges Building before continuing towards the finish near Aston University.

Great Birmingham Run Half Marathon Course

The half marathon extends beyond central Birmingham, taking runners through residential neighbourhoods and towards the southern part of the city. The longer route includes the green surroundings of Cannon Hill Park and Selly Park, providing a change from the built environment encountered earlier.

The course also takes runners around Edgbaston Stadium, the internationally recognised cricket ground that hosts Warwickshire County Cricket Club and major international matches. This section is one of the distinctive features of the longer distance.

From the southern suburbs, the route returns towards central Birmingham and eventually rejoins the 10K course. Runners pass the Selfridges Building before following the final section towards Jennens Road.

Junior Great Birmingham Run Course

The Junior Great Birmingham Run is held at Alexander Stadium, the athletics venue that hosted track and field competition during the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. The event uses a dedicated course separate from Sunday's city centre races.

The stadium provides a memorable setting for young participants, with organised start waves and a finish line experience designed to introduce children to larger running events. Junior runners also receive chip timed results.

Mini Great Birmingham Run Course

The Mini Great Birmingham Run also takes place at Alexander Stadium, using a shorter course designed for younger children. The event focuses on participation and enjoyment rather than competitive results.

Children must be accompanied by an adult throughout their run, allowing families to share the experience. The Mini event is untimed, with participants encouraged to enjoy completing the distance.

How Difficult Are The Great Birmingham Run Courses?

The half marathon and 10K feature a mixture of inclines, descents and flatter sections, reflecting Birmingham's varied terrain. Neither course is completely flat, although both include downhill stretches during the second half of their respective routes.

The half marathon has a more varied landscape because it extends into the southern suburbs and parkland. The 10K remains more concentrated around central Birmingham, with changes in elevation across the city's streets.

Both adult distances are run on closed roads, although participants should expect bends, junctions and changes in gradient. The shorter children's events are designed around the needs of younger runners rather than the demands of a conventional adult road race.

What Makes The Great Birmingham Run Special?

The atmosphere is one of the event's defining features, with spectators gathering along the routes to support runners. Music and entertainment add to the occasion, particularly around the busier city centre sections where participants pass through shopping and entertainment districts.

The organiser also provides live tracking through the Great Run app, allowing friends and family to follow participants and access results. Finishers receive a medal and T-shirt, providing a lasting reminder of their achievement.

Holding the children's races at Alexander Stadium adds another dimension to the weekend. The venue's association with the Commonwealth Games gives younger participants an opportunity to experience running at one of Birmingham's most recognisable sporting locations.

Is The Great Birmingham Run Good For Beginners?

The 10K is a suitable option for runners looking to progress beyond shorter distances or experience their first large organised road race. Its closed roads, established organisation and on course support provide an environment for participants with different levels of experience.

The half marathon is also an option for runners tackling 13.1 miles for the first time, although the varied terrain and longer distance require appropriate preparation. The combination of established race organisation and enthusiastic spectators makes Birmingham a good setting for runners taking on their first half marathon.

Great Run's general guidance states that, unless an event specifies otherwise, a course sweep vehicle travels at approximately 17 minutes per mile. Participants falling behind it may be directed onto pavements as roads reopen, so runners should check the final Birmingham instructions for any event specific restrictions.

How To Enter The Great Birmingham Run 2027

Entries are currently open for all four distances, with separate registration arrangements for the adult and children's events. The organiser reports that the previous edition sold out in advance, making early registration important for anyone intending to participate in 2027.

The half marathon and 10K are available through the Great Run website, with different pricing stages applying as the event approaches. Participants should check the organiser's entry terms for any restrictions or deadlines affecting their chosen distance.

Every child requires an individual entry for the Junior or Mini event. Junior participants can run independently, although an accompanying adult can be requested during registration, while Mini participants must run with an adult.

Running The Great Birmingham Run For Charity

Running for charity is an important part of the Great Birmingham Run, with both adult distances providing opportunities to raise money for national and local organisations. Participants can secure places through participating charities or fundraise using their own entries.

Runners considering a charity place should look beyond the minimum fundraising

commitment and consider the support provided by each organisation. Some charities offer running shirts, fundraising advice, organised cheer points and opportunities to meet other team members, although these benefits vary.

The race day supporter experience can make a considerable difference, particularly during the half marathon. Charities with organised groups along the course may provide additional encouragement and a sense of belonging for runners representing their cause.

Those who have already purchased their own entry can also run for charity without needing a separate charity place. This allows participants to choose an organisation that matters to them while retaining their existing registration.

Where To Stay

Birmingham has a substantial range of accommodation, from major city centre hotels to smaller independent properties and serviced apartments. The most convenient location depends on whether visitors are participating in Sunday's adult races or attending the Junior and Mini events at Alexander Stadium.

The Broad Street and Brindleyplace areas are particularly convenient for half marathon and 10K runners because they are close to Centenary Square. Hotels in this part of Birmingham also provide access to restaurants, entertainment venues and the canal network.

Accommodation around New Street Station and the Mailbox is another practical option. These areas are well connected by public transport and offer a variety of hotels, although participants should allow time to reach the starting area before road closures affect access.

The Jewellery Quarter offers an alternative to the busiest shopping and entertainment districts. Its historic streets contain independent restaurants, bars and accommodation, with connections to the wider city centre.

Visitors attending the Junior and Mini events may prefer accommodation in Perry Barr or another area with convenient transport links to Alexander Stadium. Families staying in central Birmingham should check travel arrangements carefully, particularly if they plan to attend both days of the event.

Birmingham regularly hosts conferences, concerts and sporting occasions, so hotel availability can vary considerably. Booking accommodation early provides a wider choice for runners travelling from outside the region.

Our Verdict

The Great Birmingham Run offers a weekend of running that combines the atmosphere of a major city event with opportunities for runners of different ages and abilities. Its half marathon and 10K provide varied urban courses, while the Junior and Mini races give younger participants their own occasion at Alexander Stadium.

For runners interested in exploring Birmingham, taking on a new distance or raising money for charity, the 2027 event provides plenty of reasons to consider making the journey.
