10 min read

The Las Vegas Half Marathon offers one of the most unusual running experiences in the United States, taking participants along the world famous Las Vegas Strip after dark. With illuminated hotels, spectacular entertainment venues and thousands of runners filling the streets, the event transforms one of America's busiest tourist destinations into a memorable half marathon course.

Part of the Rock 'n' Roll Running Series, the race combines 13.1 miles of road running with live music, enthusiastic spectators and the unmistakable atmosphere of Las Vegas. Its predominantly flat course and evening start make it an attractive choice for runners looking for something different from a traditional city half marathon.

The Destination

Las Vegas is one of the world's best known entertainment destinations, located in the Mojave Desert in southern Nevada. Famous for its enormous resort hotels, casinos, restaurants and live performances, the city attracts millions of visitors each year and offers an extraordinary setting for a running event.

The Las Vegas Strip is the centre of the city's tourist attractions, stretching along Las Vegas Boulevard and featuring some of the most recognisable hotels in the world. Visitors can explore the fountains at Bellagio, the Venetian inspired architecture of The Venetian and the replica Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas, all within a relatively compact area.

Beyond the Strip, Downtown Las Vegas provides a different perspective on the city's history. Fremont Street is known for its illuminated canopy, historic casinos and entertainment, while the nearby Arts District offers independent galleries, restaurants and local businesses.

Visitors wanting to explore beyond the city can discover the dramatic desert scenery surrounding Las Vegas. Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is particularly popular for its sandstone formations, scenic drives and hiking opportunities, while the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead provide further options for day trips.

February is generally one of the cooler months in Las Vegas, with pleasant daytime temperatures but potentially chilly evenings. The desert climate can produce considerable differences between daytime and nighttime conditions, something runners should consider when planning their visit.

History Of The Las Vegas Half Marathon

The modern Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas event has its roots in the Las Vegas Marathon, which began in 1967. The race underwent several changes over the following decades before becoming part of the Rock 'n' Roll Running Series in 2009, introducing a stronger emphasis on entertainment and large scale participation.

A significant development came in 2011 when the event adopted an evening format, allowing runners to experience the lights of Las Vegas after dark. This helped establish the race's distinctive identity and attracted considerable interest from runners seeking an alternative to conventional road racing.

The event has evolved over time, with the full marathon eventually discontinued after 2019 and the half marathon becoming its longest distance. The programme now includes a 10K and 5K, allowing participants with different running backgrounds to take part in the weekend.

Today, the race attracts runners from across the United States and overseas, combining competitive participation with the entertainment focused approach that has become a defining feature of the Rock 'n' Roll Running Series.

When Is The Las Vegas Half Marathon 2027?

The Las Vegas Half Marathon takes place on Sunday 21 February 2027, with the half marathon and 10K scheduled to begin at 4.30pm local time. Both races start on Las Vegas Boulevard near the New York-New York Hotel and finish near the Bellagio fountains.

The half marathon covers 13.1 miles, or 21.1 kilometres, and has a four hour completion limit. Participants must maintain the required pace and comply with any intermediate course cutoffs, which will be explained in the organiser's final participant information.

The wider event weekend includes a 5K on Saturday 20 February, with the evening race traditionally taking place in Downtown Las Vegas. Runners completing the Saturday 5K and either Sunday's half marathon or 10K qualify for the Remix Challenge, receiving an additional medal for completing both races.

Las Vegas Half Marathon 2027 Expo And Race Bib Collection

The Las Vegas Half Marathon Health and Fitness Expo takes place at Resorts World Las Vegas from Thursday 18 February to Saturday 20 February 2027. The venue is located at 3000 South Las Vegas Boulevard, towards the northern end of the Strip.

All participants must attend the expo to collect their race bibs, gear bags and event shirts. The expo also features running equipment, clothing, nutrition products and exhibitors from the wider fitness industry.

Runners should bring the identification and registration information required by the organiser and allow sufficient time to collect their materials before their chosen race. The official event website provides the latest collection requirements and participant instructions.

Race Day

The Las Vegas Half Marathon takes place in the late afternoon and evening, giving participants much of the day to prepare before heading towards the start area. However, the extensive road closures associated with the event can make travelling around the Strip more complicated than usual.

Recent editions have used a start village near T-Mobile Arena, with runners moving into designated starting groups according to their allocated wave. Participants should allow sufficient time for security arrangements, baggage storage and reaching the correct starting area.

Runners should plan their meals and activities around the later start, particularly if they are visiting Las Vegas for the first time. The temptation to spend the day sightseeing can be considerable, but arriving at the start well rested is particularly important for those hoping to achieve a personal best.

Las Vegas Half Marathon Course

The Las Vegas Half Marathon follows a predominantly flat road course along Las Vegas Boulevard, giving runners the unusual opportunity to experience the famous Strip without its normal traffic. The route passes some of the city's most recognisable resorts and entertainment landmarks, providing a constantly changing backdrop throughout the race.

The established course travels north from the southern Strip towards Downtown Las Vegas before returning south. Although the organiser has published the main race information for 2027, the detailed course map remains subject to confirmation, so individual streets and turning points may change.

The Start And Southern Strip

The race begins near the New York-New York Hotel, close to several of the city's most recognisable resorts. Runners set off beneath the surrounding hotel towers, with the replica Statue of Liberty and other themed buildings creating a distinctive starting environment.

The opening miles take participants north along Las Vegas Boulevard, passing large resort complexes and entertainment venues. The broad road provides space for the field to spread out, while the surrounding buildings offer plenty to look at during the early stages.

The Central Strip

As runners continue north, the course passes the central section of Las Vegas Boulevard, home to some of the city's most famous attractions. The Venetian, Caesars Palace and the surrounding resorts form part of a landscape dominated by enormous buildings, illuminated signs and entertainment venues. This section showcases the scale of the Strip, with long stretches of road surrounded by some of the world's largest hotels. The absence of normal traffic allows participants to experience an area that is usually dominated by vehicles and busy pedestrian crossings.

The Northern Strip And Downtown

The northern section of the established course takes runners beyond the busiest tourist areas towards the older parts of Las Vegas. The surroundings gradually change, with fewer large resort complexes and a mixture of hotels, businesses and historic city streets. Previous routes have extended towards Downtown Las Vegas before turning south for the return journey. This section provides a contrast to the central Strip and allows participants to experience a different side of the city, away from its most famous attractions.

The Return Along Las Vegas Boulevard

The return journey brings runners south along Las Vegas Boulevard, with the illuminated hotels becoming increasingly prominent as they approach the central Strip. The long, relatively straight sections provide clear views towards the city's major resort buildings.

The closing miles take runners back towards the Bellagio area, where the race finishes. The surrounding hotels and spectators create a memorable conclusion to the half marathon, with participants collecting their medals after completing 13.1 miles through Las Vegas.

How Difficult Is The Las Vegas Half Marathon Course?

The Las Vegas Half Marathon is generally considered a relatively accessible course because of its gentle terrain and long, straight sections. Unlike events featuring repeated climbs or steep hills, the route allows runners to settle into a consistent rhythm for much of the distance.

However, the broad roads and exposed sections of Las Vegas Boulevard can leave participants vulnerable to wind, particularly if conditions change during the evening. Although February often provides comfortable running temperatures, the desert climate can produce cooler conditions after sunset.

The event's four hour completion limit requires an average pace of approximately 18 minutes 19 seconds per mile. This provides considerable flexibility for recreational runners, although participants must also comply with any intermediate course reopening deadlines.

For runners hoping to achieve a personal best, the relatively flat profile is an advantage, although weather conditions and the size of the field may influence their performance.

What Makes The Las Vegas Half Marathon Special?

The opportunity to run along a closed Las Vegas Boulevard is undoubtedly the event's greatest attraction. One of the world's most famous entertainment streets becomes a dedicated running course, allowing participants to experience the city from a perspective normally unavailable to visitors.

The timing adds another dimension, with the transition from late afternoon into evening creating an impressive visual spectacle. As daylight fades, the surrounding hotels, signs and attractions become increasingly prominent, making the setting particularly memorable.

Music and entertainment are central to the Rock 'n' Roll Running Series, and Las Vegas provides a particularly appropriate setting for this approach. Bands, DJs and other performers have traditionally appeared along the course, adding to the sense of occasion.

The wider race weekend also provides opportunities for runners travelling with friends or family. With several distances available, participants can choose an event suited to their experience while sharing the atmosphere of a major running festival.

Is The Las Vegas Half Marathon Good For First Time Half Marathon Runners?

The Las Vegas Half Marathon can be an excellent choice for runners tackling 13.1 miles for the first time. Its manageable terrain, established organisation and four hour completion limit make it accessible to participants with a wide range of running backgrounds.

The event's atmosphere is another advantage for beginners. The entertainment, spectators and constantly changing surroundings can provide welcome encouragement, particularly during the later miles when fatigue begins to build.

For first time runners, completing an appropriate training programme and becoming comfortable with the half marathon distance will be more important than the unusual surroundings. The event offers a rewarding introduction to distance running, particularly for participants who enjoy large crowds and a lively atmosphere.

Those seeking a quieter, smaller event may prefer a more traditional local half marathon. Las Vegas is best suited to runners who want their first 13.1 miles to be part of a larger occasion.

How To Enter The Las Vegas Half Marathon 2027

Registration for the Las Vegas Half Marathon 2027 is open through the official Rock 'n' Roll Running Series website. The event uses a direct online registration system rather than a general ballot, allowing runners to purchase an entry while places remain available.

Participants select the half marathon distance, complete the registration process and pay the applicable entry fee. Prices vary according to the registration period and may increase as race day approaches, so runners should check the current cost before booking.

The organiser also offers registration for the 10K and 5K. Runners interested in completing two distances over the weekend can enter an eligible combination to participate in the Remix Challenge.

The half marathon has previously operated with a minimum participation age of 12 years, with additional registration requirements for younger entrants. Participants should confirm the 2027 eligibility rules and entry conditions before registering.

Running The Las Vegas Half Marathon For Charity

The Las Vegas Half Marathon offers opportunities for runners to support charitable causes through both an official fundraising programme and independent fundraising with their own race place.

The organiser works with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, providing a dedicated charity entry programme for participants who want to combine the race with a fundraising commitment. The programme offers complimentary race entries to runners who agree to raise a specified amount for the charity.

Runners can also choose to fundraise for St. Jude without accepting a minimum commitment, although this option does not include a complimentary race entry. Participants considering a guaranteed charity place should review the fundraising conditions carefully before registering.

Alternatively, runners can purchase their own half marathon entry and support a charity of their choice. This provides flexibility to fundraise for local, national or international organisations, although participants should discuss any available support and fundraising expectations with their chosen charity.

Not every charity will have a presence at the event or the resources to provide dedicated race day support. Smaller organisations may be unable to offer the same level of assistance as larger charities, particularly when supporting runners at international events.

Where To Stay

Las Vegas offers an enormous range of accommodation, from luxury resort hotels to more affordable properties away from the main tourist areas. For half marathon participants, staying on or close to the Strip is generally the most convenient option, particularly because of the extensive road closures associated with the event.

The southern Strip is an attractive location for runners wanting to stay close to the starting area. Hotels around New York-New York, Park MGM and the surrounding resorts provide convenient access to the race assembly area and a wide selection of restaurants.

The central Strip is another popular choice, particularly around Bellagio, Caesars Palace and The Cosmopolitan. These hotels are well positioned for exploring the city's attractions and are close to the finish area, although accommodation prices can be higher than in less central locations.

The northern Strip offers additional accommodation options, including larger resorts around Resorts World and the surrounding area. This can be convenient for visiting the expo, although runners should consider how they will reach the start on race day.

Downtown Las Vegas may appeal to visitors looking for a different atmosphere or more affordable accommodation. However, it is further from the half marathon start and finish locations, making transport arrangements particularly important when Las Vegas Boulevard is closed.

Our Verdict

The Las Vegas Half Marathon stands out as one of America's most distinctive destination running events. Its combination of an accessible course, extensive entertainment and a spectacular city setting creates an experience that appeals to runners with a wide range of abilities.

The race is particularly well suited to participants who enjoy large scale events and value the experience as much as their finishing time. Experienced runners may also find the course attractive for a fast performance, provided weather conditions are favourable.

For visitors travelling from outside Nevada, the event offers plenty of opportunities to combine running with a short holiday. The city's accommodation, restaurants, entertainment and nearby natural attractions provide reasons to extend the trip beyond race weekend. For runners looking for something different from a conventional city half marathon, Las Vegas is certainly worth considering.
