Scarpa has been making specialist mountain footwear for decades, but its modern running collection extends well beyond the type of rugged shoes you might traditionally associate with an Italian mountaineering brand. Today, Scarpa produces trail running shoes for everything from relatively straightforward paths to technical mountain terrain, fell running, skyrunning and ultramarathons.


That mountain heritage remains central to the range. Grip, foot security, protection and the ability to cope with difficult terrain feature prominently, while newer models have introduced more responsive foams and increasingly performance focused designs. Scarpa also offers shoes capable of combining sections of road with trails, although it remains very much an off road rather than conventional road running brand.

The History Of Scarpa


Scarpa was established in 1938 in the Asolo and Montebelluna area of northern Italy, a region with a long tradition of specialist footwear manufacturing. The name comes from Società Calzaturiera Asolana Riunita Pedemontana Anonima and reflects the company's origins among footwear makers in the Asolo area.


The Parisotto family took over the company in 1956 and Scarpa remains family owned today. Its history has been built predominantly around footwear for the mountains, including mountaineering, climbing, hiking and ski mountaineering rather than conventional athletic shoes.


Running subsequently became another way for Scarpa to apply that mountain expertise. The modern collection is consequently centred on trail and mountain running, with shoes ranging from accessible everyday options to highly specialised footwear for technical terrain and competition.



Why Are Scarpa Running Shoes Different?


Scarpa approaches running from the mountains rather than the road. That immediately distinguishes it from brands whose ranges have traditionally been built around road training, marathon racing or track athletics.


The terrain is therefore fundamental to understanding a Scarpa shoe. Some models are designed to move comfortably between pavement and relatively easy trails, while others use deeper lugs, more secure uppers and greater protection for mud, rocks, steep gradients and highly technical ground.


Scarpa also offers considerable variation within its trail range. The Golden Gate family provides some of the most accessible options, Ribelle Run moves towards technical mountain running and Spin includes models designed for everything from soft ground to ultradistance running. At the specialist end, Scarpa has also introduced the Alien Sky and Alien Ultra as high performance competition shoes.



How Do Scarpa Running Shoes Fit?


Fit varies according to the model and its intended purpose. A shoe developed for precise movement over technical mountain terrain is likely to hold the foot differently from a more forgiving everyday trail shoe, so it is better to assess individual models than assume every Scarpa running shoe has the same fit.


Foot security is particularly important on technical trails. Excessive movement inside the shoe can become problematic when descending, traversing slopes or changing direction on uneven surfaces, which explains why Scarpa places considerable emphasis on technologies designed to wrap and hold the foot.


Longer distances create slightly different requirements because feet can swell during extended running. Your toes still need sufficient space while the heel and midfoot remain secure. Trying the particular model with your normal running socks is therefore worthwhile whenever possible.



What Is Scarpa Presa?


Presa is Scarpa's own sole system and appears on a number of its running shoes. Rather than referring simply to one rubber compound, Presa soles are developed with different constructions, compounds and lug patterns according to the intended use of the shoe.


That distinction matters because trail surfaces place very different demands on footwear. A sole designed to move between pavement and firm trails needs to provide a smoother transition than one developed for mud, steep mountain ground or loose technical terrain.


Scarpa combines its Presa sole designs with different rubber compounds according to the model. Looking at the complete outsole, including the depth and arrangement of the lugs, is therefore more useful than choosing a shoe simply because it carries the Presa name.



What Is Scarpa SuperGum?


SuperGum is a high performance rubber compound used by Scarpa on some of its trail running outsoles. It is designed to provide the grip required when running over demanding surfaces where traction and confidence become particularly important.


The Ribelle Run 2 is a good example of how Scarpa uses it. The shoe combines a Presa outsole using SuperGum rubber with substantial 6 mm lugs, reflecting its intended use on technical mountain terrain rather than easy park trails.


As with any trail shoe, rubber is only part of the equation. Lug depth, sole geometry, the amount of ground contact and the way the shoe flexes all contribute to how it performs on a particular surface.



Why Does Scarpa Use Vibram Outsoles?


Scarpa uses Vibram technology on several running models where specialist outsole performance suits the purpose of the shoe. Vibram Megagrip is particularly relevant because it has been developed to provide traction across both wet and dry surfaces.


The Spin Ultra 2 uses a Vibram Megagrip Litebase outsole, combining grip with an attempt to keep unnecessary outsole weight down. The Spin ST also uses Vibram Megagrip but combines it with much deeper lugs because it is designed for soft and muddy ground.


This illustrates why the Vibram name alone does not tell you what a shoe will be like. Two shoes can use Vibram technology while being designed for completely different conditions.



What Is Scarpa Sock Fit?


Sock Fit is one of Scarpa's construction concepts for creating a closer, more integrated relationship between the upper and the foot. Different versions of the technology appear across Scarpa footwear, including performance running shoes.


The principle is particularly relevant to technical trail running because secure foot hold becomes increasingly important as the terrain gets steeper and more uneven. A close fitting upper can help reduce unwanted movement without relying simply on tightening the laces excessively.


Scarpa's newer Alien performance shoes use SockFit Plus, in which the tongue and gaiter construction are integrated to create a close fitting, lightweight upper. This is much more performance focused than the construction most recreational runners will require for normal trail running.



What Is Heel Drop?


Heel drop is the difference in height between the heel and forefoot of a running shoe. Scarpa does not design its entire running collection around one figure, although relatively modest drops are common throughout the range.


For example, Golden Gate 2 ATR, Ribelle Run 2, Spin ST and Spin Ultra 2 all use a 4 mm drop, while other models use a 6 mm difference between heel and forefoot. These relatively low figures may feel different if you normally run in road shoes with a substantially higher drop.


Changing suddenly to a different type of footwear can alter the demands placed on your feet and lower legs. Heel drop is therefore worth considering, but fit, comfort, terrain and your previous running shoes remain more useful starting points than choosing a shoe purely because of a particular measurement.



Does Scarpa Make Neutral Running Shoes?


Scarpa does not divide its running collection into neutral and stability categories in the same way as many major road running brands. Most of its trail running shoes could broadly be considered neutral because they do not use the traditional pronation control systems associated with conventional stability road shoes.


Stability on trails also involves much more than pronation. The width and shape of the platform, how securely the upper holds the foot, outsole contact and the ability of the shoe to remain predictable on uneven surfaces can all affect how stable it feels.


Scarpa consequently talks more about stability in relation to terrain and foot security. The Ribelle family is a good example, with designs intended to create a secure platform for running over uneven and technically demanding ground.



Does Scarpa Make Stability Shoes?


Scarpa does not currently offer a conventional stability running shoe range comparable with those available from brands such as Brooks, Asics and New Balance.


Some Scarpa models nevertheless place considerable emphasis on stability. Ribelle Run 2, for example, uses Scarpa's 3S Frame, with the three elements standing for Secure, Stable and Sensitive. The structure is designed to wrap and support the foot when moving over rough terrain.


That should not be confused with a traditional road stability shoe intended specifically to influence pronation. Runners who normally rely on that type of footwear should assess individual Scarpa models carefully rather than assuming trail stability provides the same form of support.



Does Scarpa Make Road Running Shoes?


Scarpa does not currently make a conventional range of dedicated road running shoes. Unlike brands such as Asics, Brooks, Saucony and New Balance, its running collection is focused predominantly on trail, mountain and off road running rather than everyday road training and racing.


There are, however, Scarpa shoes designed for runners whose routes include both road and trail. Golden Gate 2 ATR and Golden Gate LT sit towards this more versatile end of the range and can handle stretches of pavement alongside gravel paths, park trails and other relatively straightforward off road surfaces.


If almost all your running takes place on tarmac, a dedicated road running shoe from another brand is likely to be a better choice. If you regularly run from your front door to the trails and want one shoe capable of handling both surfaces, Scarpa's more versatile trail models become considerably more relevant.




Does Scarpa Make Carbon Running Shoes?


Scarpa now uses carbon reinforced components in its specialist Alien trail racing shoes, although these should not be confused with the conventional full length carbon plates found in many road racing super shoes.


Alien Sky uses a nylon insert containing 20% carbon fibre beneath the forefoot. It is designed to provide protection and help guide the shoe while still allowing the foot to adapt to technical terrain. Alien Ultra uses a different Squid Plate made from Pebax nylon containing 30% carbon fibre, with the structure designed to improve stability and elasticity within its highly cushioned ultradistance platform.


These are specialist performance trail shoes rather than something most recreational runners need. For runners new to off road running, appropriate grip, comfort, fit and suitability for the terrain will generally matter considerably more than whether a shoe contains carbon fibre.



Does Scarpa Make Trail Running Shoes?


Trail running forms the heart of Scarpa's running collection. The range stretches from shoes capable of handling pavement and relatively straightforward trails through to specialist models for mud, mountains, skyrunning and ultradistance competition.


Golden Gate 2 ATR and Golden Gate LT occupy the more accessible end of the collection and are particularly relevant when your routes include easier trails or a mixture of surfaces. Ribelle Run LT provides another relatively approachable route into Scarpa, while Ribelle


Run 2 increases the emphasis on precision and protection for technical ground.

Spin ST is designed specifically around soft and muddy conditions, while Spin Ultra 2 combines cushioning, protection and traction for substantially longer distances. The Alien models then take Scarpa into a new level of specialist competition footwear.



Which Scarpa Running Shoe Is Right For You?


Scarpa Golden Gate 2 ATR

Golden Gate 2 ATR (pictured above) is one of the most versatile shoes in the Scarpa running range and an obvious starting point for runners who do not spend every mile on demanding trails. It has been developed as a door to trail shoe, allowing you to cover pavement on the way to off road sections without wearing an aggressively designed technical trail outsole. The shoe uses Scarpa's Bounce Foam cushioning and a Presa outsole intended to work across roads and trails. Its 4 mm lugs provide useful traction away from the pavement without moving into the much deeper tread found on specialist soft ground shoes. This makes it particularly relevant for gravel paths, park trails, forest tracks and mixed routes.


Scarpa Golden Gate LT

Golden Gate LT is another accessible option for everyday trail running and routes combining relatively straightforward trails with sections of road. It combines an engineered mesh upper with a full length EVA midsole and a Presa outsole, providing a relatively straightforward package for runners who want comfort and versatility rather than a highly specialised mountain shoe. It uses 4 mm lugs and a 6 mm drop, compared with the 4 mm drop of Golden Gate 2 ATR. This makes it particularly interesting for runners beginning to explore trails who do not require the deep lugs and substantial protection associated with technical mountain shoes.


Scarpa Ribelle Run LT

Ribelle Run LT is designed for long distance running across varied trails and provides one of the more accessible routes into Scarpa's Ribelle family. Scarpa positions it particularly towards beginner and intermediate trail runners looking for reliability, stability and protection rather than the more technical character of Ribelle Run 2. It uses a 6 mm drop and a Presa outsole with 4 mm lugs, giving it a less aggressive configuration than Ribelle Run 2. This makes it particularly useful when your routes involve a mixture of trail surfaces rather than consistently steep, rocky or highly technical ground. The emphasis on stability and protection also makes Ribelle Run LT an interesting option as distances increase. It provides a useful middle ground within the Scarpa range between the more versatile Golden Gate shoes and the more specialised models intended for technical terrain.


Scarpa Ribelle Run LT WP

Ribelle Run LT WP adds waterproof protection to the more accessible Ribelle platform. Its role is therefore fairly straightforward: it is designed for runners who want the stability and protection of the LT while regularly encountering wet conditions. Waterproof trail shoes are not automatically better than breathable versions. They can become warmer and less breathable, while water can still enter over the ankle. The WP therefore makes most sense when prolonged wet grass, puddles and poor weather are a regular feature of your running rather than simply because you occasionally encounter rain.


Scarpa Ribelle Run 2

Ribelle Run 2 moves firmly into technical trail and skyrunning territory. Scarpa has designed it for precision and adaptability on difficult terrain, with the 3S Frame wrapping around the shoe to increase security and protection. Its Presa outsole uses SuperGum rubber and substantial 6 mm lugs, reflecting the more demanding conditions for which it is intended. This is a shoe for runners dealing with rough mountain terrain, rocks, steep gradients and technical trails rather than someone whose off road running consists mainly of flat gravel paths. The additional technical capability inevitably makes Ribelle Run 2 more specialised. Beginners do not need this level of shoe unless the terrain they are tackling genuinely demands it.


Scarpa Ribelle Run 2 GTX

Ribelle Run 2 GTX takes the technical characteristics of Ribelle Run 2 and adds GORE-TEX protection for runners tackling difficult terrain in wet conditions. It retains the technical orientation of the standard shoe but is heavier because of its waterproof construction. That trade off can make sense for mountain runners who regularly encounter prolonged wet and cold conditions, but runners prioritising breathability may prefer the standard Ribelle Run 2.


Scarpa Spin ST

Spin ST is the model to look at when soft ground is the problem. Its 7 mm lugs are considerably deeper than those found on Scarpa's general purpose trail shoes and are designed to provide traction on mud and loose surfaces. The shoe combines this aggressive outsole with a relatively lightweight and breathable construction, making it particularly relevant to fell running and shorter trail races where grip can be more important than maximum cushioning. Those deep lugs make much less sense on pavement and hard trails. As with any specialist soft ground shoe, Spin ST works best when you actually use it for the conditions it was designed to handle.


Scarpa Spin Ultra 2

Spin Ultra 2 moves in the opposite direction by focusing on long distance trail running. It uses a supercritical foam midsole to combine cushioning with responsiveness and a Vibram Megagrip Litebase outsole for traction without excessive weight. Its 4 mm lugs are less aggressive than those on Spin ST, reflecting the fact that an ultradistance shoe may need to handle a much wider variety of surfaces rather than concentrate specifically on deep mud.

This is one of the most interesting Scarpa models for runners moving into trail ultras or spending several hours at a time off road. Cushioning and protection become increasingly important as distances increase, although fit remains crucial because feet can swell substantially during long events.


Scarpa Ribelle Run Kalibra G

Ribelle Run Kalibra G is one of the most specialised shoes in the range and is designed for particularly demanding mountain conditions. It combines the technical character of the Ribelle family with additional protection and a gaiter based construction. This is not an everyday trail shoe for most runners. Its purpose becomes much clearer for mountain athletes dealing with difficult terrain and conditions where debris, snow and poor weather make additional protection worthwhile. For recreational runners using ordinary woodland and countryside trails, Scarpa has considerably less specialised and more versatile alternatives.


Scarpa Alien Sky

Alien Sky represents Scarpa's newer generation of specialist performance footwear and is designed around vertical and technical trail competition. Its construction places considerable emphasis on low weight, energy return, precision and maintaining contact with difficult terrain. A supercritical foam platform is combined with a carbon fibre reinforced nylon insert and Vibram Megagrip outsole. The insert contains 20% carbon fibre and sits beneath the forefoot rather than functioning as the type of full length carbon plate commonly associated with road racing shoes. For most beginners, Alien Sky would be unnecessary. It becomes relevant when the runner already understands the demands of technical mountain racing and specifically wants a shoe optimised for that environment.


Scarpa Alien Ultra

Alien Ultra applies some of the same performance thinking to longer distances. It uses a high stack of supercritical foam together with a Pebax based Squid Plate containing 30% carbon fibre and a Vibram Megagrip outsole. Its geometry is developed around efficient ultradistance running rather than primarily vertical performance. This makes it a particularly interesting development for Scarpa because it combines the company's technical mountain heritage with the increasingly responsive and highly cushioned construction now seen in modern trail racing shoes. Again, it is a specialist performance choice. Runners entering their first trail event do not need this level of technology, while experienced ultrarunners may find it more relevant when speed and efficiency become important alongside grip and protection.

Are Scarpa Running Shoes Sustainable?


Scarpa has a wider environmental programme covering its manufacturing and supply chain. The company says around 90 per cent of its manufacturing and material supply takes place in Europe, while much of its production is carried out within factories it controls directly.


The company has also introduced initiatives intended to reduce the environmental impact associated with its operations and materials. Some footwear incorporates lower impact or bio based materials, although the precise components vary considerably between products.

That does not make a Scarpa running shoe environmentally neutral. Modern running footwear remains a complex combination of foams, rubber, textiles, adhesives and other materials, and manufacturing and transporting those products inevitably consumes resources.


It is therefore more accurate to say Scarpa is taking steps to reduce aspects of its environmental impact rather than describe its running shoes simply as sustainable. Durability also matters because a shoe that remains functional for longer may need replacing less frequently.




Are Scarpa Running Shoes Worth It?


Scarpa is particularly worth considering if your running is genuinely off road. Its mountain heritage is evident throughout the range, especially in the attention given to grip, protection, foot security and the different demands created by particular types of terrain.


The collection is also broader than it might initially appear. Golden Gate provides relatively accessible options, Ribelle ranges from beginner friendly trail footwear to highly technical mountain shoes, Spin covers soft ground and ultradistance running, while Alien introduces a new level of specialist performance technology.


The limitation is equally clear. Scarpa would not be our first recommendation for someone completing almost all their mileage on pavement because it does not offer the depth of conventional road training and racing footwear available from the major road running brands.

Once your running heads onto trails, particularly more demanding ones, Scarpa becomes much more interesting. The key is choosing according to your terrain rather than assuming the most technical shoe is automatically the best one.
