Huawei Running Watches Explained: Which Is Best For Runners?

Huawei has become a much more serious name in running watches than many runners realise. The company may still be better known for smartphones and general smartwatches, but its latest wearables include advanced satellite positioning, detailed running metrics, structured training features, route navigation and increasingly sophisticated heart rate monitoring.

The range now includes everything from lightweight Watch Fit models to premium outdoor watches, but runners should pay particular attention to the Huawei Watch GT Runner 2, Watch GT 6, Watch GT 6 Pro, Watch Fit 5 and Watch Fit 5 Pro. The GT Runner 2 is the clearest indication yet that Huawei wants to compete for runners specifically, with dedicated marathon training and race features rather than simply adding running as another workout mode. Huawei Running Watches Explained? The latest Huawei watches are genuinely capable running watches, with several models now offering features that go well beyond basic pace, distance and heart rate tracking. At the most straightforward level, Huawei watches record distance, pace, elapsed time, heart rate, cadence and your GPS route. More advanced models add information such as running power, Running Ability Index, training load, recovery information, route navigation and performance predictions. Satellite positioning has also become an important part of Huawei's running proposition. Running is at the centre of the software as well. Huawei's Intelligent Marathon Mode combines event planning, structured training and race day guidance, allowing runners to build training around a target event rather than simply recording individual sessions. The watch provides metrics including Running Ability Index, running power, training intensity and lactate threshold information. It can also estimate potential race performance using previous training, running ability and other personal data. During a marathon, the watch can provide guidance based on pace or heart rate, show elapsed time and estimated finishing time, and indicate how closely you are following your intended target. This makes the GT Runner 2 considerably more interesting for serious road runners than a conventional smartwatch that simply records the final result. Satellite positioning is another major focus. Huawei has developed a new antenna system specifically to improve tracking of pace, distance and routes, while battery life is rated at up to 32 hours in outdoor workout mode. Huawei also quotes up to seven days under typical everyday use and 14 days under lighter use. For runners training for 5K through to marathon distance, the GT Runner 2 is now the standout Huawei model. Huawei Watch GT 6 The Huawei Watch GT 6 remains a strong alternative for runners who want running features combined with a more traditional everyday smartwatch design. It is available in 46mm and 41mm versions, making it easier to choose a size that suits your wrist. The larger model offers the stronger battery performance, with Huawei quoting up to 21 days under lighter use, around 12 days under typical conditions and up to 40 hours in outdoor sport mode. The GT 6 includes advanced satellite positioning and supports more than 100 sports modes, including road and trail running. Running information goes beyond basic pace and distance, with features including Running Ability Index and running form information available on compatible workouts. Navigation is another strength. Routes can be used during outdoor activities, making the watch useful for runners exploring unfamiliar areas as well as those who primarily follow established road routes. The GT 6 is therefore the better choice for somebody wanting a versatile smartwatch that is also very capable for running. If running itself is the overwhelming priority, however, the dedicated features and lighter construction of the GT Runner 2 now make that the more obvious option. Huawei Watch GT 6 Pro The Watch GT 6 Pro develops the same basic platform with more premium materials and additional outdoor and health features. It uses a titanium case and sapphire glass, with a 1.47-inch amoled display. At approximately 54.7g without the strap, it is noticeably heavier than the GT Runner 2, although that remains reasonable for a premium outdoor watch. The Pro retains Huawei's advanced satellite positioning and supports running, trail running and a wide range of other sports. It also adds features aimed at people who combine running with hiking, cycling, golf, diving and other outdoor activities. Battery performance is particularly strong. Huawei quotes up to 21 days under lighter use and around 12 days under typical use, with up to 40 hours available in outdoor sport mode. For runners, however, the important question is whether you actually need the additional materials and outdoor capabilities. The GT 6 Pro is a highly capable running watch, but somebody buying primarily for road running or marathon training may get more relevant features from the much lighter GT Runner 2. The Huawei Watch GT 6 Pro Huawei Watch Fit 5 The Watch Fit 5 takes a very different approach. Rather than resembling a conventional round sports watch, it uses a slim rectangular design intended to be worn throughout the day as well as during exercise. Despite that lifestyle appearance, the Fit 5 has become surprisingly capable for running. It supports outdoor running with Huawei's Sunflower Positioning System and records information including pace, distance, route and heart rate. Running power has also been added, providing another way of assessing running intensity alongside pace and heart rate. The watch can display more detailed running information after a workout and feeds the recorded data into Huawei's wider training and recovery system. The Fit 5 remains extremely light and is therefore particularly comfortable for runners who dislike wearing a bulky sports watch. Huawei quotes up to ten days of battery life under lighter use, around seven days under typical use and approximately four days with the always-on display enabled. This combination makes the Watch Fit 5 particularly attractive for beginners and recreational runners. It provides considerably more running technology than its appearance might suggest without requiring the size or weight of a conventional sports watch. Huawei Watch Fit 5 Pro The Watch Fit 5 Pro builds on the lightweight Fit concept with more premium construction and additional sports features. It uses sapphire glass and a titanium bezel while retaining the slim rectangular format. The Pro is therefore aimed at people who like the lighter Fit design but want something closer to a premium sports watch. For runners, its combination of advanced positioning, heart rate monitoring and detailed workout analysis makes it suitable for regular road running as well as broader outdoor use. Huawei also supports trail running and navigation features on the Pro, giving it more flexibility for runners who regularly leave the road. The Fit 5 Pro is an interesting middle ground in Huawei's range. It offers more specialist capabilities than the standard Fit 5 while remaining considerably lighter and less imposing than the GT 6 Pro. For somebody wanting a lightweight watch for running, everyday wear and occasional trail use, it could be one of the strongest options in the range. What About The Huawei Watch 5? The Huawei Watch 5 can certainly be used for running, but running is only one part of what the device is designed to do. It is a premium smartwatch built around health monitoring, connectivity and everyday smart features as well as sport. It includes dual-band, multi-system satellite positioning and an extensive selection of exercise modes, so it is perfectly capable of recording regular running. Its priorities are nevertheless broader than those of the GT Runner 2. For somebody wanting a premium smartwatch that also handles running well, the Watch 5 makes sense. A runner primarily interested in training and racing is likely to find the GT Runner 2 or GT 6 more suitable. What About The Huawei Watch Ultimate 2? The Watch Ultimate 2 sits at the opposite end of Huawei's range and is designed primarily as a premium adventure and outdoor watch. It combines extensive health monitoring with specialist features for activities including diving and outdoor exploration. Running and trail running are supported, along with advanced satellite positioning and navigation. The drawback for a road runner is simply that much of the watch's capability is unnecessary. Its Intelligent Marathon Mode can create customised training around a planned event, taking account of the runner's current ability, target and race date. The watch can track progress against a target, display estimated finishing time and provide information designed to help runners judge whether they are maintaining the required pace. For somebody preparing for a first marathon or attempting to improve a previous time, that can be considerably more useful than collecting ever larger quantities of post-run data. The 46mm GT 6 and GT 6 Pro can stretch to around 21 days under Huawei's lighter-use testing, with around 12 days quoted under typical conditions. Both can provide up to 40 hours in outdoor sport mode. The Fit 5 offers up to ten days under lighter use and around seven days under typical conditions, which remains very good for such a slim smartwatch. Manufacturer figures should always be treated as guides rather than guarantees. GPS workouts, screen brightness, always-on displays, notifications and continuous monitoring will all affect how frequently a watch needs charging. Even allowing for that, runners who dislike charging a watch every day should find Huawei particularly attractive. Huawei Health Huawei Health is the companion app used to set up Huawei watches, synchronise workouts and review fitness and health information. After a run, information from the watch is transferred to Huawei Health, where runners can examine workout records and longer-term trends. The app is also involved in managing training plans, routes, device settings and many of Huawei's health and recovery features. Huawei watches work with compatible Android phones and iPhones, although some functions differ according to the phone being used. The wider third party watch app ecosystem is more limited than on some mainstream smartwatch platforms. Huawei may once have been an unusual choice for a runner, but that is becoming increasingly difficult to argue.
