When people think of destination marathons in the United States, races such as New York, Boston and Chicago usually spring to mind first. Yet tucked away in the warmth of southern Florida is one of the country's most enjoyable marathon experiences. The Miami Marathon combines ocean views, palm-lined streets, world-famous beaches and a vibrant Latin American culture to create an event unlike any other.

Yet tucked away in the warmth of southern Florida is one of the country's most enjoyable marathon experiences. The Miami Marathon combines ocean views, palm-lined streets, world-famous beaches and a vibrant Latin American culture to create an event unlike any other. Running a marathon in Florida brings its own challenges. Even in January the temperatures are considerably warmer than many runners from Europe or northern America are used to, but that is all part of the attraction. While others are training through snow and freezing temperatures, Miami offers sunshine, blue skies and the chance to combine a marathon with a winter holiday. If you're looking for a race that delivers spectacular scenery, excellent organisation and the opportunity to explore one of America's most exciting cities, the Miami Marathon deserves a place on your bucket list. Miami Miami is one of the most recognisable cities in the United States. Famous for South Beach, Art Deco architecture and its beautiful turquoise coastline, it has developed into a global centre for finance, tourism and international trade. More than seventy percent of the population has Hispanic or Latino heritage, giving the city a distinctive culture that sets it apart from anywhere else in America. South Beach is undoubtedly the city's most famous district. Its colourful lifeguard towers, outdoor cafés and iconic Art Deco hotels have appeared in countless films and television programmes. Ocean Drive is full of energy from morning until late at night and provides one of the highlights of the marathon route. Away from the beaches, Little Havana offers a completely different side of Miami. The Cuban influence can be seen everywhere, from cigar shops and traditional bakeries to live music spilling onto the streets. It is well worth spending an extra day or two exploring before or after the race. The history Miami's first marathon dates back to 1977 when the Orange Bowl Marathon was established. Although the event attracted respectable numbers initially, it struggled to compete with larger American marathons and eventually disappeared after financial difficulties in the late 1980s. For more than a decade Miami had no marathon at all before the event was successfully revived in 2003. Around 3,400 runners took part in that first edition, but numbers grew rapidly as word spread about the spectacular course and winter sunshine. By its tenth anniversary the race had sold out with around 25,000 participants across its various events. Today the Miami Marathon is firmly established as one of America's leading destination races and continues to attract runners from around the world. Race organiser The Miami Marathon is organised by Life Time, one of the largest endurance event organisers in North America. When is the Miami Marathon? The race takes place every January. Distances Marathon Half Marathon 5K Is there an expo? Yes. The Miami Marathon Expo takes place over the two days before race day at the Miami Beach Convention Center. All runners must collect their race number at the expo, as there is no race morning bib collection. Shuttle bus tickets are also collected here. While it's smaller than the expos at races such as London or New York, it has everything most runners need before race day. How many runners? Around 18,000 runners take part across the marathon and half marathon each year. The start at the Kaseya Center, 601 Biscayne Blvd The course Because of Miami's climate, race day starts early. The marathon and half marathon begin at 6am outside the Kaseya Center in downtown Miami, with thousands of runners gathering before sunrise. The opening miles immediately demonstrate why this race is so highly regarded. After leaving downtown the course heads across the MacArthur Causeway towards Miami Beach. As dawn begins to break over the Atlantic Ocean, runners are treated to magnificent views back towards Miami's skyline, with the city's skyscrapers reflecting in Biscayne Bay. It is one of the most memorable starts to any marathon in North America. The MacArthur Causeway itself stretches for more than three miles, linking downtown with Miami Beach while passing several exclusive islands lined with luxury waterfront homes. Palm Island, Star Island and Dodge Island all sit alongside the route, providing a glimpse of some of Florida's most expensive real estate. At around four miles runners arrive in Miami Beach before passing the marina and joining the world-famous Ocean Drive. This section is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the race. The colourful Art Deco buildings, outdoor restaurants and famous South Beach atmosphere create a backdrop unlike anywhere else on the marathon calendar. With Lummus Park and the Atlantic Ocean just metres away, it's easy to forget you're running a marathon. The course continues north through Miami Beach before turning onto Washington Avenue. After enjoying several miles beside the coast, runners leave the island via another spectacular crossing over the Venetian Causeway. Many marathon courses feature bridges simply because they have to. The Venetian Causeway is very different. Crossing a chain of small islands connected by elegant bridges, it offers uninterrupted views across Biscayne Bay towards downtown Miami. The luxury homes lining the waterfront make this one of the most picturesque sections of the entire race. Back in downtown Miami the half marathon runners separate shortly before thirteen miles and head towards their finish at Bayfront Park. Marathon runners continue south into Brickell, Miami's financial district, where modern skyscrapers dominate the skyline and luxury apartment buildings overlook the bay. The course then heads onto the Rickenbacker Causeway for an out-and-back section before passing the beautiful Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. Built in the early twentieth century, the Italian Renaissance-style estate is one of Miami's most famous landmarks and is well worth visiting during your stay. As the race progresses beyond mile eighteen the character changes once again. Kennedy Park signals the approach to Coconut Grove, Miami's oldest neighbourhood. Shaded by banyan trees and lined with cafés, galleries and independent businesses, it has a far more relaxed atmosphere than downtown or South Beach. The support from local residents is excellent and provides a welcome boost as fatigue begins to set in. After reaching the southernmost point of the course runners finally begin the journey back towards the city centre. Thankfully this isn't simply a case of retracing your steps. The return uses different roads for much of the final section, helping to keep the scenery fresh during the closing miles. The final stretch heads back through Brickell before turning towards Bayfront Park and the finish line. The atmosphere builds steadily as runners approach downtown once again, with friends, family and spectators creating a memorable finish to one of America's most scenic marathons. Aid stations begin early on the course and are positioned at regular intervals throughout the race. Water and sports drinks are available at every station, while energy gels are provided later in the race to help runners maintain their energy levels in the Florida heat. Runners head back from Miami Beach to Downtown, along the Venetian Causeway What's unique? There are very few marathons where you can watch the sun rise over the Atlantic Ocean before running along one of the world's most famous beachfront roads. The combination of Miami Beach, Ocean Drive, Biscayne Bay and the spectacular skyline makes this one of the most visually impressive marathon courses anywhere in the world. It also offers the rare opportunity to escape the depths of winter and enjoy marathon running in warm sunshine. Do charities benefit? The Miami Marathon has a charity programme, although it is much smaller than those associated with races such as London, Chicago or New York. Most participating charities are local organisations, but runners are free to raise money for any charity of their choice. Our verdict The Miami Marathon delivers exactly what most runners hope for from a destination race. It's professionally organised, the course is varied from start to finish and the scenery is genuinely outstanding. The early start means the crowds are never quite as loud as you'll experience in London or New York, but the trade-off is cooler conditions and an unforgettable sunrise over Biscayne Bay. If you're chasing a personal best, the humidity may make this a difficult place to achieve one, particularly if you're travelling from a cooler climate. However, if your priority is experiencing one of the most beautiful marathon courses in North America while combining it with a few days in one of the world's great holiday destinations, the Miami Marathon is hard to beat.
