Samsung Galaxy Watches Explained: Are They Good For Runners?

Samsung has steadily expanded the running capabilities of its watches, adding more detailed workout metrics, personalised heart rate zones, dual-frequency GPS, recovery information and structured coaching. The latest Galaxy Watch9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra2 take this further, with Samsung placing considerably greater emphasis on running, training load and recovery. For runners who also want the everyday features of a full smartwatch, Galaxy Watches are therefore becoming much more interesting. They will not necessarily be the best choice for every runner, particularly those tackling very long endurance events, but the gap between Samsung and traditional sports watches has narrowed considerably. Are Samsung Galaxy Watches Good For Running? Current Samsung Galaxy Watches are capable running watches and provide considerably more than basic distance, pace and heart rate tracking. A Galaxy Watch can record outdoor runs using GPS and provide information including distance, duration, pace, heart rate, cadence and other workout metrics. Samsung Health then provides a more detailed record of your training and allows you to examine your activities away from the watch. Newer Galaxy Watches add more sophisticated features. Samsung's Running Coach can assess your running ability and provide personalised training, while features including Energy Score and, on the Galaxy Watch9, Daily Cardio Load can provide additional information about training and recovery. The important question is therefore no longer whether a Galaxy Watch can be used for running. It clearly can. The more useful question is whether its combination of running features, battery life, smartwatch functionality and Samsung Health is right for the type of running you do. The Current Samsung Galaxy Watch Range Samsung's running watch range changed significantly in July 2026 with the introduction of the Galaxy Watch9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra2. The Watch9 becomes the mainstream option, while the Ultra2 sits at the top of the range for runners and outdoor athletes who want greater battery life, durability and navigation capabilities. The Galaxy Watch8 Classic remains available and provides an alternative for users who prefer Samsung's more traditional watch design. Older Galaxy Watches can still be very capable running devices, but anyone buying new should compare them carefully with the latest generation because some of Samsung's newest training features are hardware or software dependent. Samsung also states that GPS can operate for up to 20 hours, while GPX navigation can reach up to 16 hours when the relevant exercise power-saving mode is used. The watch is considerably more rugged as well. Samsung gives it 10 ATM and IP69K water and dust resistance and lists additional durability certifications, making it much better suited to demanding outdoor use than a conventional smartwatch. The trade-off is size and weight. The Ultra2 measures approximately 47mm across and weighs 61.5g for the watch body, so it will not suit everybody, particularly runners who prefer a lightweight watch or want something unobtrusive for sleeping. The original Galaxy Watch Ultra remains a capable running and outdoor watch, and runners may still encounter it while comparing Samsung devices. It is therefore an important part of deciding whether a Samsung watch is right for you. Dedicated sports watches still have advantages, particularly for runners who prioritise very long battery life or highly specialised endurance features above everything else. But for the large number of people who want a smartwatch that is also a genuinely useful running watch, the latest Samsung Galaxy Watches deserve serious consideration.
