BIG SUR MARATHON
CALIFORNIA, USA
HOW MANY CHARITIES ARE INVOLVED?
Only around 20. It's a small event with only 4500 runners and the size of the charity programme reflects this. Most charity teams are made up of 5 to 25 runners.
WHY IS IT GOOD FOR FUNDRAISING?
It's a sell out event, which means the charities are able to connect with runners searching for an entry. The profile of the charity programme is limited on the website, but the charities are able to offer plenty of support on race weekend, including pre event activity and cheer zones if requested.
WHAT ABOUT AFTER THE RACE?
Most charities will send a representative who will be on hand to support their runners. Don't expect big functions like in New York, Chicago or London.
HOW MUCH IS RAISED?
No figures are published, but the event is itself a charity foundation and raised $275k for local good causes in 2019.
HOW TOUGH IS IT TO GET A CHARITY ENTRY?
It's easy, and the amount runners are asked to raise isn't high, given how hard it is to get a general entry. $1250-$1500 is the typical fundraising pledge needed.
