LONDON MARATHON
LONDON, ENGLAND
HOW MANY CHARITIES ARE INVOLVED?
There are literally thousands. More than 600 have guaranteed entries in the event and there are many more who have runners raising funds for them using their own entry. Most only have a handful of entries but some of the larger ones have well over 100.
WHY IS IT GOOD FOR FUNDRAISING?
Everything about the event encourages fundraising. Before, during and after give opportunities for charities to support their runners. The website encourages fundraising and the vast majority of the field are raising funds, be it on a guaranteed entry or using their own. There are charity cheer zones throughout the event and in some places, like Tower Bridge there are up to thirty next to each other.
WHAT ABOUT AFTER THE RACE?
Most of the bigger charities have a post race function to thank their runners for their efforts. Many of these include food and drink and masseurs. Friends and family are sometimes invited to these.
HOW MUCH IS RAISED?
The amount has risen over the years and reached £60 million in 2023!
HOW TOUGH IS IT TO GET A CHARITY ENTRY?
The pandemic made it harder for charities, as it did for most aspects of events, but the 2024 event saw a significant upturn in applications for runners. Some charities hold internal ballots as they were over subscribed. The amount that a runner needs to raise can very significantly from £1250 to £3000.
